“HEEEELLLLLLLLLP!” Jake screamed from the bottom of the embankment.
“PLEASE SOMEONE HELP ME!” He knew no one was around this late at night, it was the woods after all and in winter no one hunted at night.
Jake knew he wasn’t speeding so he thought he must have hit an icy patch on the road and lost control of the car. He blacked out when the car crashed into the barrier that separates the woods from the road.
When he came to it was raining and he was about 10 feet from the car, bleeding and in a lot of pain.
He had left the party angry after he found his girlfriend having sex with his best friend down in the basement; and now here he was freezing and bleeding with what he was very sure were many broken bones.
He looked over at the car and saw it was almost split in two. How he had survived the crash at all was a miracle and he knew that.
‘Why did I go to that stupid party?’ he thought to himself.
He was about to call out for help again when he heard his phone ringing; he looked over towards the mangled scrap of steel that was once his car looking for any light produced by his phone.
Jake saw light coming from near the front wheel just as his phone stopped ringing and decided to try and crawl over to it; the moment he went to move however the pain in his legs screamed up through his entire body, pain which he had never felt before. The world around him seemed to fade as he slipped unconscious from the pain.
When Jake came to he could faintly hear “Hotel California” by The Eagles in the background. He slowly opened his eyes, aware that it was now a lot brighter than it had been when he passed out, and saw a cold white sterile looking room surrounded him.
He started to get excited, thinking he had been found and taken to hospital, and tried to call out; the pain was almost as bad as the pain that made him pass out.
“Don’t try to talk; you will only make things worse” a voice from nowhere said.
Jake looked around the almost empty room. He noticed a table on the far side with a speaker on it and assumed that is where the voice came from.
Above the table attached to the wall just below the ceiling was a camera pointed directly to him.
“I’m in trouble” he thought.
Jake laid there for what seemed like hours before he heard the voice again.
“I had to make sure you wouldn’t scream when you woke up Jake, that is why it hurts when you try to talk,” the voice said.
Jake raised his head and looked at the speaker.
“Jake, I want you to know that I mean you no real harm. In fact, I do wish to help you.”
Jake was still looking at the speaker when he realised the voice wasn’t coming from there; it was coming from behind him somewhere.
He started to tilt his head back when a hand reached out and pushed his head forward again. Jake let out a startled cry that flared pain up in his throat so bad that it brought tears to his eyes.
“Just lay still Jake, no need to exert energy you don’t have.”
Jake lay there completely still while the hand stayed on his head.
The hand left his head and Jake could hear feet shuffling behind him.
“I need you to sleep for a little while Jake, I have some things to do that you may find quite painful,” the voice said.
Jake felt a slight prick and was drifting off to sleep.
Jake was woken by a tapping on the head, when he opened his eyes he was looking right at the unknown man. Only he wasn’t unknown; Jake knew who he was, or at least he had seen him around town every now and then.
“Speak,” the man said.
Jake shook his head to say no.
“I said speak Jake.”
Jake looked up at him for a few seconds then tried to say no.
Jake was surprised that he could now speak again, even though it hurt a little bit.
“Good,” the man said. “Very good. Now you and I are going to have a little chat. I will try and answer any questions you have. First however, I need to tell you that whilst you are not tied down you will find it very hard to move.”
“Why?” Jake asked.
There was no reply.
“What’s your name?” Jake asked.
The man looked down at Jake for a few seconds before answering him, “You can call me Kirk” he replied.
“Now” Kirk said, “As I said before, I DO want to help you but you have to help me first. I have some questions I need answered and only the truth will save you.”
“Okay” replied Jake.
Kirk reached beside him and picked up a picture of a young girl from the small steel wheeled table there.
“Do you recognise this girl Jake?” he asked.
Jake looked at the picture and shook his head no.
“Are you sure Jake?” Kirk asked.
Jake looked from Kirk back to the picture and said no.
“DON’T FUCKING LIE TO ME YOU CUNT” Kirk shouted at him. “Do you recognise the girl in this fucking picture Jake?” he asked again.
Jake lay there for a moment startled by the anger in Kirk’s voice, “Yes I recognise her” Jake finally replied.
“Good and what was her name Jake?”
“I don’t know” Jake replied. Jake could see the anger in Kirk’s eyes at this response.
“You killed a girl and you don’t even know her name? That’s fucked up Jake, it really is.”
“I didn’t kil…” Kirk’s right arm shot out at Jake’s face with great speed – Jake didn’t know it had happened until the pain flared up.
“Don’t try and lie to me you fuck, we both know who she is and what happened. I just want you to finally admit it” Kirk said.
Jake could only lay there with blood trickling from the side of his mouth. He was too scared to speak for fear he may say the wrong thing.
“Okay” Kirk started, “I know what I have to do.”
Kirk walked away from Jake and went through the only door in the room; he was gone for a few minutes and when he returned he was pushing a wheelchair.
“Stacey!” Jake called out.
Jake had left Stacey in the basement at the party, half naked, and now here she was, blind folded and tied to a wheelchair in some madman’s lair.
“So,” Kirk began, “You killed a girl and you don’t remember her name. Are we remembering yet?”
“IT WAS AN ACCIDENT!” Jake screamed, “No one was meant to be there, I swear.” Tears were rolling down Jakes face and into his ears.
“But someone was there Jake, and you still went ahead and torched the place, you let it burn down to the ground and stood by even when you heard her screaming didn’t you?” Kirk said.
“No!” Jake cried.
“Yes you fucking did, and when the screaming had stopped, what did you do then Jake, huh, what the fuck did you do?” Kirk was angrier than he had ever been in his life. He wanted Jake to remember all of it and to admit to it.
“She wasn’t meant to be there” Jake replied through the tears, “No one was meant to be there.”
“Why Jake, why the fuck did you do it?”
Jake tried to stop the flow of tears and looked at Stacey. He let out a loud sigh.
“It was an insurance job” Jake began. “We were paid to burn the house down. It was old and falling apart and the owner couldn’t sell it, so he paid us to torch it so he could collect the insurance.”
Kirk couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
“An insurance job, you killed my sister for an insurance job?” Kirk stared at Jake waiting for a reply.
“I didn’t know she was your sister man, fuck I DIDN”T EVEN KNOW SHE WAS……”
Before Jake could finish Kirk was standing over him throwing punches wildly at Jake’s head. Jake still couldn’t move so he had no choice but to take the beating. Jake screamed until he passed out.
Jake came to and laid there with his eyes closed hoping it was all a dream. When he opened his eyes he saw the sterile room around him. He looked to his right and saw Stacey, still tied to the wheelchair but the blind fold had been removed. She had been crying and was now bleeding from various small cuts on her arms and legs. Kirk was nowhere to be seen.
“Stacey,” Jake whispered.
Stacey looked up at Jake and was about to speak when Kirk walked into the room.
“I see you’re with us again Jake. Good, now we can get down to business.”
Jake noticed that Kirk had changed clothes and now wore what he assumed were old work clothes.
Kirk wheeled a small table over to Stacey and picked up a butchers knife.
“You took something from me Jake. It only seems fair to me that I take something from you” Kirk said and jammed the knife into the back of Stacey’s neck with enough force that it came out through the jugular.
Jake screamed and tried to get up off the table but only managed to fall to the floor. He laid there and watched Stacey die.
Kirk walked over to Jake with another knife he grabbed from the table and knelt down beside him.
“You see Jake, take something I love, I take something you love. Not even Daddy can save you this time.”
With that, Kirk rammed the knife into Jake’s heart and watched the life drain from him.
Kirk doused the room in petrol and picked up the iron bar with a rag wrapped around one end. He walked to the door way and lit the rag and tossed it into the room which caught fire almost instantly. He walked down the corridor and turned left and walked out what used to be the front door.
Kirk stood at the end of the drive and watched as the old hospital burned. The fire spread quickly from room to room; flames blew out what windows hadn’t been smashed by vandals. He walked to his car, got in and drove away.
He stopped by the side of the road where Jake had crashed and torched Jake’s car.
Kirk arrived home and went to what used to be his sister’s room.
“You can now rest in peace Mary” he said to the empty room.
He was never seen again.
